Description

My take on one of the main factions from 1938: A Very British Civil War.
The Royalists support Edward VIII's government.

Lord Cirencester (heavily influenced by Ian McKellen's Richard III)

Loyal Grenadier Guard (complete with Bearskin)

Royalist Faction Flag, white armband and Grenadier Guard cap badge.

1938: A Very British Civil War (1938:AVBCW) is a systemless war game setting conjured up by the clever chaps from Solway Crafts and Miniatures. The background is an alternative Britain where Edward VIII refused to abdicate, dragging the country into civil war.

The setting is based in the reality of the abdication crisis but doesn’t take itself very seriously. There’s an underlying amateur eccentricity in the various factions and source material that I like.

1938:AVBCW is influenced by Sir Ian Mckellen’s 1995 film version of ‘Richard III’, which relocated the play's events to a fictionalized version of Britain in the 1930s.

Solway Crafts and Miniatures have published a number of A5 pamphlets describing the setting and the various factions involved in a fight for the future of Great Britain and her Empire. Most of them are admirably illustrated by Pete Barfield.

The setting is vague enough for wargamers to operate a pick and mix approach to the background and factions to suit individual tastes. Several interwar skirmish rule sets are available and can be easily adapted to the 1938:AVBCW setting.

If you’re interested I suggest you get hold of a copy of the concise sourcebook which covers the basic background.
